Wishlist Meme

I have been informed by some not-so-anonymous people (*cough[livejournal.com profile] mumumugencough*) that it is mandatory for me to put one of these up this year. *dramatic sigh* So I guess I will. However, it's just a teensy bit close to Christmas, because, uh, the holidays EXPLODED on me? (You were wondering why the Ficmas dried up, weren't you? Really sorry, but it couldn't be avoided. I'm going to try really hard to finish those and have massive postings soon. Gomenasai!) Seeing as it is the 18th of December, I'm really not expecting anything, except maybe for you guys to have a good holiday season. (Yeah, I'm cheesy.)

Step One:

* Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 unlimited 8D holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

* If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

* Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, or link to this post (it'll be public) so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two:

* Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

* If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

* You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

* There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

Holiday Wishlist, [livejournal.com profile] greyias Edition

  1. I love art. I wish I had the patience to do it better myself. I have notebook pages filled with failed sketches of Cool Scenes, either from stories I've written, or just things that would Look Cool.
  2. Fic - I didn't sign up for any of the Secret Santas (I felt guilty about not being able to reciprocate), but I'm never opposed to a fun snark fest between my favorite guys. Fic recs count too! I'm woefully behind on my reading, but I've been craving some nice friendshippy John and Rodney adventures lately.
  3. Recs! - TV, movies, books, whatever -- I'm always in the search of the Latest in Squee. My big loves are friendship and snark (shocking, isn't it?), so anything that hits that particular kink is always greatly appreciated.
  4. Icons - I snuck in during the Permanant Account sale and snatched me one, purely so I could have more icons. I seem to have a startling lack of, of all things, Rodney icons, and I'm still not sure how I don't have a squee, lol, and \o/ icons.
  5. Squee - I'm stealing this from [livejournal.com profile] naye, but yes, squee! It makes me happy, especially Real Life Squee. Happiness is infectious!
  6. Charity! - If you're really in the giving mood, there's thousands of charities on Razoo that you can donate to, or just someone on the street.
  7. Surprise me? Actually, I'd be surprised with anything. I'm easily startled like that ;) I'm pretty easy to please.

And before I disappear back into the Holiday Madness Mist again, how's everyone doing this fine holiday season?

# 3 - TV Rec

Not sure if this is what you were looking for, but I recently got into a new TV show, Chuck, that is great on the banter front!

It's always so much fun with each episode, whether they're obscure references to Back to the Future or Die Hard or making fun of Best Buy. Also, Adam Baldwin, Jayne from Firefly, what else could you ask for? It's really a great show, with great friendship and snark, if that's what you're looking for.

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
<3

Eeee! Thank you! I love Chuck! I've been meaning to make a squee post about that show for a while, because you're right, it's made of Win. I love them making fun of Best Buy, retail in general (Hollywood needs to make fun of retail much more), and the humor in it is balanced out so perfectly with the drama.

I absolutely adore all of the characters, especially the main three team. I'm starting to develop a big girl!crush on Sarah, especially now that they've moved past the initial stages of

I think one of the big plusses is that one of the creators of the show is Josh Shwartz, who was the mastermind behind The O.C. Which was a show that had its problems, like all of them, but one of the best first (and last) seasons of any show. He seems to have a particular affinity for friendships, and I love his dialogue almost as much, sometimes even more, than Joss Whedon's.

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

Oh yeah! Last week's episode was amazing!!!!! I loved it so much!! I totally did not see it coming at all. A well written ep, I think.

Sarah is awesome, Chuck makes me smile, and Casey makes me laugh and sometimes makes me sad. But I LOVE all the characters on that show soooo much.

Anyway, oh well, it seems like you've already beaten me to that one. lol. I tried. But it's great to find another chuck fan *g*

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)

I adored last week's episode, because it played with so many things that I love about the show. Chuck's protectiveness of his family, his friends, even his sometimes skeevy coworkers, and Sarah's protectiveness over Chuck coming out in full force. Oh, and Casey and his toe CRACKED. ME. UP. And I loved that they "went there" at the end, because I think it'll be interesting, and it's something that I'm not sure Chuck has really considered/comprehended about Sarah.

And oh, Sarah, made me want to hug her. That girl has depths.

lol. I tried. But it's great to find another chuck fan *g*

My brother did it to me *g* But yes! It's always great to have another fan! Now I know I can squee and it won't be met with an echo \o/

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] tigerkity16.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Sheesh you're fast with the replies *blink blink*

It'll definitely be interesting to see how he deals with the knowledge, finally, that this is Sarah's job. Killing people is what she does, and this isn't the first time. I think that it's gonna be a tough pill to swallow for him. Also, there's that whole trust thing again. He'll never know what's a lie and what's the truth with her. Poor Chuck. And poor Sarah for never being able to tell him the truth.

Lol. You will be met with an echo: I'm the echo. I will not be silent if you do a chuck squee post, I promise! There's just too much to squee about!
It's just too bad that it'll be a while until the next episode.

[identity profile] water-soter.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Oh me too! I love this show and it was the one I was going to rec! *sniff, sniff* Anyway, I so agree with you guys, it's going to be interesting the fallout from this week's episode. Having something like that shoved into Chuck's face . . . What can I say, I want more Chuck NOW! I especially love that Chuck is not only not your atypical hero, but his relationship with his sister and Captain Awesome *crackles* is not something we tend to see in television. Usually you have sister-sister relationships, or more recently, brother-brother.

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] tigerkity16.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
It is a very welcome and refreshing relationship. definitely. Two siblings who actually love, genuinely love each other is hard to find on tv these days.

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I have way too much time on my hands ;) And then other times I can't find time to fic. Stupid holidays.

I think things are definitely going to be strained between them for the next few eps. What I'm unsure of is if Chuck heard the whole exchange between Sara and, uh, whatever his name is. I'm leaning toward him possibly not hearing, just because he got so freaked out. I think he probably still would've been freaked out, but if he'd heard the rest he might understand that she's not a cold blooded killer.

There's just too much to squee about!

WORD.

And waiting for the next episode, it's going to be hard :(

Re: # 3 - TV Rec

[identity profile] michelel72.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Hullo -- you don't know me, but I've been watching you here for a little while (in a good way, not a stalker way, just because "Wit's End" kicked my ass and I've liked your other stuff too). But I just friended you because your profile says it's okay and after the last two episodes of "Chuck", I've really really wanted some squee, because I don't know anyone else watching it. (In those last two -- three? -- eps, I feel like everything came together, all the pieces really clicked, and Chuck really contributed instead of just being a liability. He learns The Castle cold! He gets the banking codes! He's touring the facility and picking up slack! -- oh, wait.)

As for recs for friendship and snark, I'm guessing you already know the Whedon works, (the new) "Doctor Who", and "House", so, um, yeah. Look, monkeys!

Anyway, feel free to show me the door at any time, but otherwise, hi!

I can give you a TV rec, though mostly this is because I'm totally gone for this show right now, and I'd love to have someone else to squee with and maybe write some fic. "Wiseguy" (see icon) is my newest fan crack. It's a very angsty/heavy show, not exactly a light romp, but it's simply fantastic with the character development over time, and the main character has a deliciously antagonistic and bantery relationship with his FBI "handlers"; the main reason why the show has drawn me in as powerfully as it has, in fact, is because I love watching their interactions develop from genuine antagonism/dislike to antagonism laced with respect and affection. It's also got some of the most awesome h/c this side of SGA ("awesome" defined here as "totally hits my h/c kinks").

The only problem is that it's kind of hard to get hold of. You can get some (but not all) from Netflix and some (maybe all?) from Amazon Unbox. The DVDs are out of print and impossible to find. I also found an LJ comm that has the first two story arcs for download; I'd rather not list it in an unlocked post, but let me know if you're interested and I'll PM you.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw your squee post on it the other day and quietly tried to locate it on my, *achem* usual sources to no avail. It definitely sounds like my kind of show, and eee, character development over time, anatonistic/banter, and h/c, oh, h/c sounds like ♥! I am definitely interested! :D

Here's an icon, you can have it if you want it:

Not a happy squeey one, but I hope you'll like it anyway!

Books - if you like historical detective types, then Lindsey Davis' Falco series is excellent ('The Silver Pigs' is the first book). Roman Empire, dodgy dealings, seedy detective (sort of) and a personal history that draws you in every bit as much as the excellent plots (best to read the books in order). Can also recommend Michael Jecks, Candace Robb and Peter Tremayne (his historical detective books, not read any of his sci-fi ones yet) - and, of course, the Cadfael books by Ellis Peters!

If you like animal books, then 'An Otter on the Aga' and its sequel 'An Eagle in the Airing Cupboard' by Rex Harper are great books about a RSPCA man, his sanctuary, his life and the animals he has met. Also any of the books by Doreen Tovey (cats, donkeys and non-animal based autobiographies).

I'm not reading much sci-fi at present (other than fanfic!), but have enjoyed Asimov's Foundation Series, most of the John Wyndham books (Triffids etc), 'Fade Out' by Patrick Tilley and 'Conqueror's Pride', 'Conqueror's Heritage' and 'Conqueror's Legacy' by Timothy Zahn (these are original fic, not his Star Wars books - though I can rec them as well if you like SW!!).

And last but not least (for now anyway):

Well, you said to surprise you!!! *bg*

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Eee, pretty icon! With scenery! Totally works for me! :D

And ooh, *makes note of all of those books* It'll probably take me like, ten years to get through them, but I have a list now! And I knew Timothy Zahn's name sounded familiar. I don't know if I've actually read any of his SW stuff (I have a bad habit of not reading media tie-ins when they don't include the character/setting that I like the most in the series/universe), but those all sound good. Thank you!

Well, you said to surprise you!!! *bg*

Ahhhhh! *dies of fright*

Oops, I've killed Grey!! LOL!

I have a copy of that Otter on the Aga book going spare and am happy to post it - you want?

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably best not to--I've had your postcards in my hand for a while, but have yet to make it to the post office. It's likely the Otters would never return to you, knowing me as I do.

Ah, I meant to keep as I need to downsize my book collection a little (or else buy a bigger house, which is so not happening right now!).

[identity profile] mumumugen.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Just you wait, Grey.
I'm a little under the weather (I'm sick again =_= Bagh) but as soon as I'm not sore, I'm going to do you a Christmas present so hard, you're going to be like OH MY GOD OH NO YOU DI-N'T THAT'S TOO HOLIDAY-ISH and I'll be like HELL YEAH and you'll be like THAT'S OBSCENE, IT'S TOO MUCH and we'll Squee.

Or maybe not-- who knows? Just conditioning it so as not to set myself the bomb by raising TOO high a standard. I'll just say, I'll try my best. :o

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-18 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Being sick is BAD, and it immediately excuses you from... well, everything XD

you're going to be like OH MY GOD OH NO YOU DI-N'T THAT'S TOO HOLIDAY-ISH and I'll be like HELL YEAH and you'll be like THAT'S OBSCENE, IT'S TOO MUCH and we'll Squee.

*iz ded... from lafter*

And you know that I'd adore anything you did. I still have that sketch of my alien race that you helped me with that I cuddle and coo at whenever I pick that story up. ♥

Here's some recs for you. I don't know how you feel about crime-dramas but if you haven't seen Life or The Mentalist you are really missing out on some of the best shows out there. They both have surprised me by how good they are. You really need to watch them.

A movie that you must see is "Music Within" It's a lovely dark humor story about the founder of the "People With Disabilities Act". Wonderful story, a real heart warmer must watch.

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd had the pilot episode for The Mentalist downloaded for a while now, and checked it out with my visiting Aussie buddy last night. Verily amusing, and very good! Not the Psych rip-off I was expecting. And Life... which one is that again?

*adds "Music Within" to D/L list as well* Always love a good movie!

[identity profile] water-soter.livejournal.com 2008-12-19 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Life it's about this cop who was convicted of a crime he didn't commit and spends 12 years in prison but then is released when it is proven that there was no physical evidence tying him to the crime. Now he has uddles of money and his job back as a detective. He has Zen and a criminal mind on his side to catch the baddies as well as trying to find out who was behind his frame-up. It's really good, and has a good doze of humor as well as interesting cases. A must see.

Yeah, I was kinda iffy about the Mentalist, since I so love Psych, but I was amazed by simply how good it is. You must continue to watch, it really gets better.

TV rec: "Starsky & Hutch", best buddy cop show of all times. Great friendship between guys, lots of fun banter, action and plenty of h/c :D

Who was that masked reccer? :D

Thank you! I've had this one on my list for a while, but for some bizarre reason can never find an episode when I'm in the mood. Maybe I should break down and get it on iTunes.q

MERRY CHRISTMAS! So, you said you like art, and you want snark in fic, and while I can't do fic, I hope snark-in-art is a suitable replacement.

*big huggles*

Hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year ^_^

Oh, do you mind if I also post this over on my journal?

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Eeee! You gave me art! And snark! You gave me art'n'snark! \o/

Heeeee! I adore John in the elf costume (oh, so much love for the jingly shoes), and the ear comments, and John dragging the ranting Rodney down the hall! (And the random wreath hanging on Atlantis's walls! Double <3!)

And of course, of course you may post! :D This should be enjoyed by all!

[identity profile] gnine.livejournal.com 2008-12-22 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, so glad you like! ^__^

Hee, art'n'snark, it works so well! I'll admit, I was maybe having waaaaay too much fun with John's costume, poor boy.

*huggles* Hope the Holidays are treating you well! ^__^

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-12-23 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Art, snark, how could I not love? ;)

I was maybe having waaaaay too much fun with John's costume, poor boy.

But he's so cuuuuuuuute with his jingly toes!

*huggles* Hope the Holidays are treating you well! ^__^

*hugs!* They're getting much better. Last week was very stressful, but it's all been sorted out more or less. (Now if I can only finish certain ficlets for people...)
