30_Gens Fic: Penitence

Sad news today... kind of ironic that it came out the same day I finished this. Heh.

Title: Penitence
Rating: PG
Genre: Gen, Angst, Introspection
Word Count: ~4000
Theme number: #2 - Unfamiliar Territory
Character(s): Rodney McKay
Beta: [profile] twit1217, who without... I would make very little sense. I ♥ my beta! Any remaining mistakes, afraid they're all me.
Spoilers: Huge honking and flashing their lights spoilers for "Miller's Crossing"
Summary: It's not penance, because oh, that'd be the kind of afterlife he'd want if he was apt to believe in that sort of thing. Need to atone for your sins? Drink a Molson's, we'll call it even. (Tag for "Miller's Crossing")

(The guilty one is not he who commits the sin, but the one who causes the darkness.)

Definitely not my usual comedic, snarky affair.

Big Bang is Live!

Eeeeeeee! *incoherent flailing/squee* (I almost typed "squailing", wow)

Thanks to all the hardworking mods, this year's [info]sgabigbang is live! The site has a bunch of new skins, which are just lovely (I believe my favorite is Inkblot).

Title: See No Evil
Author: [info]greyias
Word Count: ~89,000
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Gen, Friendship, Angst
Summary: In a world without the SGC, John Sheppard never got his second chance and is ushered into early retirement. Nine months later he's working as a test pilot for the world's leading defense contractor on a groundbreaking new plane, and has just been introduced to his difficult new coworker, one Dr. Rodney McKay. However, not everything is as it appears to be. There's something very strange about this plane, John's employer--and Rodney McKay.

Art:
See No Evil by [info]mapsandlegends
*flail/squee/squail* There's ART! The lovely [info]mapsandlegends chose my story, and oh my god. It is absolutely beyond gorgeous! The level of detail is just mindblowing! I keep looking at it and seeing something else. Without spoiling anything, all I can say is that it's a perfect companion to the story. Seriously, I'm speechless (well, almost speechless, other than "squailing").

Feedback:
Feed the authors! Feed the artists! A special comm has been set up for this event,[info]sgabigbangfb, with a post for each participant and fic/piece of art. A lot of work has gone into this event from every camp, so if you enjoy it, let us know!

My feedback post is located here.
[personal profile] mapsandlegends' post is here.

I've already begun the Kindle conversion process on several stories... With over two million words of new SGA fic, I think I know what I'll be doing this weekend!

Gateverse Remix!

And I know I have like another few days of vacation to squee and flail about, but upon my return to my humble abode I woke up... well, not sick as a dog, but I am definitely not in the land of sunshine and lollipops. I'd go to a doctor, but the last time I did that when I felt really under the weather he was all "Oh, I am diagnosing you with a runny nose!" and I just about punched him in the runny nose, so I think I'll prescribe myself sleep and leave it at that.

But, Monday, other than the draggy things, was very cool, as it was [profile] gateverse_remix reveal day!

I got assigned [personal profile] leesa_perrie, who it was very hard to not slip up and reveal that to (although she probably totally guessed it at some point). I'd like to say that it took me a really hard time to figure out what I wanted to remix, but I've always been a little bit in love with her Cousins Series, and I got bit with the image of John trying to teach Rodney to drive, and somehow that morphed into...

Driver's Ed (An Annoying Cousin, the Dukes of Hazzard Remix) (~4,200 words)
PG, gen, AU - Remix of [personal profile] leesa_perrie's An Annoying Cousin
Like every new life experience, Rodney McKay had been absolutely terrified, and it was John's duty as the older, more responsible sibling... cousin—to impart the wisdom of the older generation.

On the flip side, [personal profile] dossier was assigned to me, and did a wonderful, awesome, and "I really wish I had thought of that" remix of "No Traveller Returns", documenting the further adventures of the RepliTeam, and a really interesting and chilling twist on the end of my fic that makes a lot of sense after watching "Be All My Sins Remember'd": No Traveller Returns (the Look Homeward, Angel remix)

I still haven't worked my way through everything that's been posted, but I did manage to read [personal profile] xparrot's Any Port in a Storm (Cold Winds, Hot Air remix), which is Ronon and Rodney stuck in a blizzard, chock full o' h/c and I cannot stress the awesomeness of the dialogue. Just about every single one of Rodney's lines is a gem, and the Ronon voice is spectacular.

30_Gens Fic: Never a Nursemaid

No... I'm not procrastinating on continuing my [community profile] sgabigbang fic at all...

Title:
Never a Nursemaid
Rating: PG
Genre: Gen, Humor, (very light) H/C
Word Count: ~6600
Theme number: #6 - Sick Day
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, smatterings of Carson
Spoilers: Teensy tiny ones for "The Game" and some John background from "Outcast".
Summary: John Sheppard failed at bedside vigils. Seriously failed.

Beta: The ever lovely Gayle (whom I finally convinced to get a LJ account, so I can now refer to her as [profile] twit1217 as well, bwaha!), for the lightning fast beta and for always laughing at my jokes
Extra Thanks: [personal profile] sgatazmy for the title! Hee! And to [profile] water_soter for, um, random dialogue spurning sessions.
A/N: This started out in an exercise to see if I could write a fic of pure, unrepentant fluff. The answer is no, I cannot (*sad*), and was finished as sort of a birthday present for [personal profile] leesa_perrie, who then insisted I share with the world.

Character Meme (gone out of control)

The Character Meme That Turned Into Fic Crack Snarkapalooza We'll just go with character meme.

Originally from [personal profile] mumumugen, who after knowing me for more than a decade, should really know better than to encourage me in matters such as this.

.:Rules:. (in which I blatantly disregard two out of the three)
1. Choose a few of your own characters. Five at the most
2. Make them answer the following questions
3. Then tag three people. (...go on, I dare ya.)

.:Characters:.
John Sheppard (SGA)
Rodney McKay (SGA)
I was going to do three others, but two someones took over. You're all shocked, I know.

.:Questions:.

FIC: Wit's End

After much blood (papercut, possibly unrelated), sweat (approaching deadlines and all), tears (...okay, I might be exaggerating), and literally sleepless nights, I present my attempt to do (almost) every cruel thing to Rodney that I can possibly cram into one story. Mucho thanks to [personal profile] sholio for extending/conveniently-forgetting-to-close the bonus round of [community profile] sga_genficathon.

Title: Wit's End
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Gen, Friendship, H/C, Angst
Word Count: ~19,500
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, the most appropriately-named-OC-EVAH
Spoilers: None really, although in my mind it's set close to the end of Season 3, so there might be creeping background ones.
Beta: Gayle, Gayle, the wonderful Gayle, who stayed up late with me Sunday and Monday night trying to push me past that edge
Special Thanks: [profile] water_soter and her constant demands to see each scene after they were done, ego-stroking, and for giving me a hundred titles that I didn't use, and keeping me from falling into the sap trap around 1:30 AM. To [profile] muzzle_ for letting me talk his ear off about time loops, the villain's name, and the very disturbing image of John Sheppard in a high school cheerleader's outfit. And to [personal profile] xparrot and her story "Games of Chance", which inspired this in part.
Summary: "Trust me, Colonel, when I do finally snap – in the far flung future after one of those idiots known as my staff sets the city's self-destruct for the googolnth time – I assure you, it's not going to be a pretty sight."

I was going to be bad and combine this with another post... but it's long enough, and I'll spam you guys with rambling author's notes and bemoaning lack of sleep in a later entry.

Genficathon Revealed!

Ah, April has been such a great month due to the backbreaking efforts of [info]friendshipper, whose hard work has brought us all of the wonderful stories for the first, maybe (hope hope hope) annual [info]sga_genficathon. Not only did she run the comm, post the stories, and ride herd on the authors, but she wound up writing four very awesome stories, one of which has me itching to write a western AU.

(I'm talking about The Great Pegasus Train Robbery, by the by. Go, read, enjoy.)

I wound up writing two myself, both in the humor genre. You're all shocked, I know.

Into the Woods - Which really should be titled "The Ransom of Rodney McKay". I did not intentionally base it on the O. Henry story, "The Ransom of Red Chief", but the idea behind the story cracked me up too much to not try. Zorin, the kidnapper named after a James Bond villain, actually came away from the experience far more whole than I was originally intending to: I really wanted to work in swinging crushing logs, collapsing rope bridges, and Indiana Jones sized boulders in, but alas those seemed too far fetched. Another time, dear Zorin, another time.

The Physicist Bride - A pinch hit for the "self-sacrifice" prompt. Combination of one of my original ideas for the above prompt, and shamelessly inspired by Don Juan McKay and Other Universal Improbabilities by [profile] liketheriverrun (I KNEW IT SOTER! DO YOU HEAR ME?) Rodney and his numerous footnotes took over before I could have him and the rest of the team run rampant over the streets of not!Agrabah and make gratuitous Disney references, but I did manage to work in that chandelier swinging action I've been wanting to do for over a year now. Ah, good times.

Aaaaand now... I ought to pick up Big Bang again, but part of me wants to see if I can't finish my first two ficathon attempts that just kept insisting on jumping genres and see if I can't get them posted before April's up.

30_Gens Fic: Altruistic Streak

Title: Altruistic Streak
Rating: PG
Genre: Gen
Word Count: 573
Theme number: #22 - Argument
Summary: "One day, John, that altruistic streak is going to get you killed."
A/N: A quick musing that popped into my head this morning (I'm hopeless, yes). It just so happened to also fit one of my themes for [profile] 30_gens, woohoo!

FIC: Thicker than Water (1/3)

Title: Thicker Than Water
Rating: PG-13
Genre: Gen, H/C, Angst, and AU
Word Count: ~18,000
Characters: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Carson Beckett
Spoilers: Major ones for “Epiphany”, other minor ones up to that point. Slight spoilers for details we learn in “Outcast”, as well as tiny ones for things concerning Rodney’s past.
Summary: Carson has discovered his own version of Pandora’s Box. (Response to Atlantica/Jumperbay’s “Lean On Me” challenge)
Beta: Gayle, Gayle, the wonderful Gayle who I haven’t sent into coma with my everlasting love for commas, and who poked, prodded, and helped me refine the story to what it is today. You are the bomb, milady.
A/N: I've committed fanfic cliche! (But I couldn't help myself). Mucho thanks to the folks at the fanfic_med YahooGroup for all their help at the inception of this story, and  [profile] water_soter for letting me wangst on her shoulder about titles (before she finally broke and gave me one!) Timeline wise, this is set immediately post "Epiphany".

Crack Fic: Threadbare

Title: Threadbare
Genre: Gen, Humor, Crack
Summary: A good pair of socks is hard to find.
A/N: Not pure refined crack, some of the cheaper grade. Written for [profile] jadesfire2808, who I offered to write "sock fic" for after recently suffering from a tragic sock accident. This in no way can make up for her angst, but hopefully can soothe her soul a little. I also apparently need more to do.

Rating: PG-13 (...ish)
Genre: Gen, h/c, friendship
Word Count: 1768
Spoilers: Anything up to 4x02 "Lifeline
Summary: Actions speak louder than words – especially when you don't talk much to begin with.
A/N: Written for Leesa Perrie during the Jumperbay's Secret Santa Fic Exchange. She requested a Ronon/Radek/Rodney friendship fic. I think it leans more towards Ronon and Rodney, but Radek is definitely there too! Thanks to the wonderful Gayle for a quick beta. This is set somewhere between "Lifeline" and "Reunion".

Spoilers: It's all one big spoiler for "This Mortal Coil". Anything up to "Lifeline" is also fair game. In fact, there be spoilers in the author’s notes. Quickly, look away!

The Not-So-Quick Fic: Suspicion AU (aka, Why the Athosians REALLY left Atlantis)

Okay, the last one, I swear. Despite the fact that I've now named the universe (thanks to [personal profile] dossier's term of "lightswitch duty"), and that I'm finding it terribly amusing that the Genii wouldn't have been able to effectively raid Atlantis during "The Storm" because they couldn't open any of the doors... no, no! Out of my head!

I really wish I could blame this one on someone else... but apparently my own comments are doing it now. Beware of a semi-spoiler, expanding on a character we learn of during S4's "Missing". His personality is probably radically different from portrayed, but we're not given a lot to go on with the dialogue, so I'm winging it.

Is it sad that these are getting progressively longer? (Or the fact that there's now three?)

Son of a Quick Fic: 38 Minutes AU

...I really need more self-restraint. [personal profile] kriadydragon is in no way responsible for the fact that my mind latches onto innocent little comments ("Although I doubt anyone will be calling Rodney for help once he gets the gene. Poor John.") and runs to strange places with them. However it still is [personal profile] sholio 's  fault. Sorry, but it's true.

Thankfully, I don't think you people can inspire anything for "Suspicion". Hah!

A quick "Hide and Seek" AU, For Sholio

I want to say, that this really is Sholio's fault, as a discussion on her journal somehow generated the question:

Although I think it's pretty evident that even people without the gene can get in and out of their quarters. It would certainly suck if the handful of people with the gene had to go around opening doors and turning on the lights every morning! Although that's a hilarious thought for an AU ... what if NOTHING in Atlantis worked without the gene?

FIC: By Any Other Name

Title: By Any Other Name
Rating: PG, safely
Genre: Gen, Angst
Word Count: ~3330
Spoilers: Numerous, all the way up to "Lifeline".
Summary: What's in a name? John's starting to ask himself that very question. (semi-tag to Adrift and Lifeline)
Beta: The wonderful Gayle, who puts up with my insecurities and ending sentences with prepositions. She deserves a cookie... or a whole plate of cookies.
Feedback: Any, especially since I managed to stay serious for several sentences in a row.
Author's Notes: This is a departure from my usual style of writing. It's basically an excuse for me to put my fannish observations on the evolution of character relationships via naming conventions into a story... or in other words, meta wrapped in a ficcy package. Originally written right after Reunion, but revised a little to hint at the end of "Miller's Crossing". Only a hint though, I don't think anyone will get it but me.

John Sheppard had never really given much thought to names... )
