What's in a name?

Uh oh... I just got a Dreamwidth invite code (yay for the lottery!), but I'm faced with a new dilemma. The user name "grey" is still open at Dreamwidth. Do I become a bland color, or keep my strange and unique, but probably confusing to pronounce "greyias"?

Hand over that code! :D

Seriously, stay with [livejournal.com profile] greyias. How else will we know it's you?

Bwahaha! You'll have to pry it from my cold, dead hands ;)

How else will we know it's you?

We could all agree upon a secret symbol that when we meet, I will draw one half in the dirt, and then you complete it.

...but something tells me that's been done.

I've never had any trouble spelling your name, since you use the right vowel for me! Although I know it looks right to you, "gray" will never look like the right spelling of the colour to me ;)

I took the chance to drop my annoying numbers - I tend to go by 'Jades' or 'Jadesfire' where possible anyway, and I haven't come across another in fandom yet. But I like 'Greyias'. It's a nice shape in my head :)

You can blame my brother for that one ;) When I was eight I needed a handle for a BBS Door Game we liked to play, but my brother refused to let me use the keyboard (the jerk). For some reason he used the British spelling. So the 'e' has always been my 'name', while the 'a' has always been the color to me.

I took the chance to drop my annoying numbers

Aww, but I liked your annoying numbers. But I haven't come across another Jadesfire either, so you're probably safe.

No "flip a coin" option? (heh)

That's a challenge. Myself, I've finally given in and started self-identifying with the numbers in my username; it's easiest to stay the same everywhere. I met you here, so you're "greyias" or "grey lupous" to me ... but I don't know any other greys to confuse you with!

So: beats me, dude. Then again, I never did know how to pronounce "greyias" .... :>

But this way I force you into a choice against your will! It's what any good supervillain would do.

Then again, I never did know how to pronounce "greyias" .... :>

I've always pronounced it "Grey-YUS" in my head... although it's interesting to see how others might do it.

Hmmm. My pronunciation has always been "GREY-ee-us ... grey-EYE-us? ... well, anyway, Grey ..." Which is a bit polysyllabic. Then again, it wasn't until Hermione mocked Viktor's pronunciation of her name (in, like, HP book four) that I learned I was mispronouncing it mentally, so there you go. Mental pronunciation remapping, commence!

The 'i' is the evil francophone in me, trying to keep the proletariat down by throwing strange letters in where they seemingly don't belong.

And Hermione... yeah, it wasn't until the movies came out that I realized it was "Her-my-nee" and not "Herm-ee-ohn". Whooops.
