Unwise purchase on the horizon

So you know, after I officially make my decision to move to another city (without finding a job first, although, srsly, how often does that happen beforehand?), add a lovely rent check to my bills, on top of moving costs, Christmas on the distant horizon, and [livejournal.com profile] kymbie's visit in December... you would think it would be easy to resist temptation to buy things I don't need.

But I seriously want.

And because it makes me laugh:

Meanwhile, I do have thoughts on "Whispers"... but I'm attempting to form them into a 'video review'. I know, I'm scared too.

OMG TEENY TINY COMPUTER WANT!

...sorry for the caps. I'm in the same situation as you, and. I really, really want a teeny tiny computer. They were evil enough to have little Asus EEEs on display in the central train station a couple of weeks ago, and I got to hold one, and now I am even more full of desire for them.

Ahhhh. At least there are lolcats for distraction!

And GO video review of Whispers! XD

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Never apologize for caps. CAPS MEANS YOU MEANT IT! XD

And oh, oh, yes it's a terribly distressing want. Teeny, tiny computer to go! And more than that, torturing you by letting you hold one. (Was it the pretty Tiffany's blue one?)

I've been staring at these teeny tiny computers for months! XD I've gone from wanting an EeePC, to a HP MiniNote, to an Acer Aspire One, back to the MiniNote, then to the MSI Wind, and have landed on this itsy bitsy Dell as my holy grail of netbooks! It has a full version of Ubuntu and you can get into its guts and switch things out!

*takes deep breath*

And GO video review of Whispers! XD

XD You guys are either going to laugh yourself silly or start throwing rotten tomatoes at me. I'm already snickering uncontrollably, so if it's the latter I can't say I'll put up much of a fight.

I'm in serious lust with the Aspire One - you can get the most basic version for around £200. We get a slightly different version of the Mini to you guys, and no choices, but at £300, it's more expensive for us than the equivalent One (1GB RAM, 120GB hard disk, Linpuslite £250). The only way I'm holding off is promising to buy myself one in the sales. But *flails* WANT!!!!

ETA: OH GOOD GRIEF! I have one! *flails* how spooky is that?

Video review? My mind is boggling already ;)

OMG! I have insane amounts of jealousy and euphoria for you at the same time! Very spooky, but very cool! I nearly snatched up an Aspire One about a month ago when they hit shelves here in the States, but decided to hang on for the Dell edition to compare. And dude, those specs? Seriously awesome! Congrats! :D

Video review? My mind is boggling already ;)

It keeps EVOLVING (and then devolving!) I swear I'll finish it eventually! XD

Teeny, tiny computer to go! And more than that, torturing you by letting you hold one.

I know!! It weights almost nothing - such a tiny thing! And you found a tiny thing with Ubuntu...! I'm THIS CLOSE to expiring (or at least making a terminally stupid purchase) from sheer want. XD

(Was it the pretty Tiffany's blue one?)

Fortunately not! Just the plain white one. But. So pretty!

XD You guys are either going to laugh yourself silly or start throwing rotten tomatoes at me. I'm already snickering uncontrollably, so if it's the latter I can't say I'll put up much of a fight.

Aww, we wouldn't do that! Besides, - don't worry. I'm sure it'll be as excellent in every way that the episode was. XD

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm verily surprised how much I want a Linux system on the teeny machine, and not XP. And Ubuntu at that! From what I've looked, I think it's the first Ubuntu offering on the netbooks/UMPC platform.

I'm THIS CLOSE to expiring (or at least making a terminally stupid purchase) from sheer want. XD

Stay strong, Naye! Stay strong! Think of all the shinier prettier toys they'll have out next year! Heck, next month at the rate they're going.

Aww, we wouldn't do that! Besides, - don't worry. I'm sure it'll be as excellent in every way that the episode was. XD

Ahahaha! So true! So very true!

I love, love Ubuntu! I miss it! I had weird computer troubles around January, and for some reason XP fixed it when a reinstall of Ubuntu wouldn't... and now I'm paying for a backup program that only works with Windows or Mac, so I'm a little stuck. But. It's such a good OS, and I do try and pimp it to my friends! Once I've got a computer I'm less worried will have a nervous breakdown if I switch OS again, I am definitely going back to Ubuntu.

Actually, the plan is to buy a computer without Windows! When I have an actual job, and actual money for things like that, of course. SIGH! Staying strong, here! Staying strong! Good luck resisting the teeny tiny Ubuntu cuteness!!

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yay, someone who has used Ubuntu! I kept hearing people discuss it on the radio and see it pop up in articles, but haven't actually encountered anyone who's used it. Is it more like Windows, Mac, or a completely different feel?

Good luck resisting the teeny tiny Ubuntu cuteness!!

Oh, thank you! It's hard, but thinking about the fact that I'll be broke come end of October or November is helping ease the temptation some. It doesn't temper the desperate OMGWANT though.

EDIT: Oops, somehow pressed the post button too soon.

Yes! I used Ubuntu for six months - wrote my thesis on it and everything. I loved it! But like I said - weird computer issues forced me to go back to Windows, and now I'm kind of stuck with it until I'm making money and can buy a new computer.

It's fabulous, though - I always feel a little lost around Macs, and I had no problems at all with Ubuntu. It's so customizable that you can make it feel very Windows. Just - more flexible, with less annoying things you've got no control over. And the Ubuntu community on-line is incredibly active and helpful! I did run into a few problems and questions, and I always found a solution in one of the Ubuntu forms!

Being broke is no fun. Ahh. One day, I shall be a Rich Librarian! And then I shall buy tiny computers for everyone! XD

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-10 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that makes me feel so much better! I always have difficulties with the Mac environment, but have attributed it to literally growing up from practically birth using Windows and DOS -- but the customization sounds lovely. With the multitude of programs I use (that sadly, are limited to either Windows or Mac), I don't think I could switch over to it on a main computer. However on a tiny travel machine that I'd only use for net and word processing anyway? A resounding yes.

And then I shall buy tiny computers for everyone! XD

Oh, Rich Librarian, you're way too good to us!

OMG THE DELL IS SO PRETTY!!

I was bored at work today and made a list of All Things Wrong With Whispers and sent it to SGA buddy who is at home with lumbago, poor guy. I think I'll follow it up with the Marine Buddies pic to cheer him up - that pic is just too precious for words. XD

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Marine Bunny is made of win! (and adorable) And your list sounds very fun XD

OMG THE DELL IS SO PRETTY!!

I know! I keep pawing the screen making "Want!" noises. Which is a good thing I'm alone here in the office today. I'm trying to keep your very effective math in mind (that and the fact that everyone I know would be frowning in disapproval at me for buying a mini-computer months before I say sayonara to my steady paychecks.)

I've seen laptops that size for sale here for the last year, and drool every time I see one - HOMG WAAAAANT! You could pop it into your bag and go anywhere with it! Like a notebook!

LOLCATS ARE LOL! XD

And the Whispers thoughts intriiiiigue...

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 05:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You could pop it into your bag and go anywhere with it! Like a notebook!

I know! I could be ficcing on my lunch hour, or in secret at my desk (not that I would ever do such a thing... ever...) Or on car rides or... no, must stay strong...

...but they're so pretty.

And the Whispers thoughts intriiiiigue...

There's one part of it that is shamelessly inspired/ganked from your episode review XD And I can't stop laughing long enough to focus on making the rest cohesive.

"This is not the laptop you are looking for..." - did that work?! *g* Seriously cool looking toy, that laptop is!!

LOL on the lolcats!!!! Especially the bunny one! Aww...!

Looking forward the the video review...sounds intriguing!!

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-09-09 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, it helped a little *g* It is serious cool to have a real computer that can go anywhere with me... but reality bit me in rear when I started doing (unrelated) budgeting for the rest of the year.

And hopefully the video review will get finished! It's frustrating me far more than it should.
