My Father, the American Idol

Today I woke up early and managed to actually make myself write before the first cup of coffee, which is a feat in and of itself. Sadly, now that I've had my first cup I'm not sure if I'll keep any of it. (Why does it seem that I've written every scene before, just with different variations? Is this normal?) I also realized I don't have any clear defined idea of what the "middle" of this thing consists of. (I know the end... and some interim scenes, just not, y'know, the things to drive it there.) Uh, oops. Plot fairy?

Just finished another backlogged project at work today. It feels really strange to get stuff done. Also, it's really strange for people to come to me to ask various IT/AV/computer-related questions and expect me to be able to fix it. Even stranger, I seem to be having those answers. I have no idea what's going on, but I shall be very still and hope it continues.

ALSO! Today's snicker-worthy anecdote (other than my adventures in OS installation):

My father discovered Facebook... a few weeks ago, I don't remember the exact date. He's always a little slow on the social fads, but whatever, it's kinda funny/cute. He is convinced that Facebook is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

...and then he started getting friend requests.

No, no, not the strange one or two friend requests from the people in odd parts of the world who are not part of any of your social networks -- he started getting a lot of requests, from a lot of random people. Primarily from women. (And gay men XDDD) And he asked me if this was normal -- and seeing as I had my buried in trying to figure out how to figure out how to make a bootable USB stick -- I had no real answer for him than a "huhn".

Then my grandfather calls to congratulate my dad on his performance that night on televison. I believed my father's reaction was, "...?" At that point, we learned that Dad shares the name with one of the contestants this year on American Idol. And apparently they share some passing resemblance, so either people are just that blind on Facebook to not notice the thirty year difference, or they're friending him because they think he's this guy's father. Much raucous laughter ensues, spam-worthy amounts of friend requests, as well as my father scheming of ways to profit off of this. (If he were a Sim in Sims2, he would so be of the Money Aspiration.)

ETA: Ahhh, it turns out that said Idol was eliminated either last week or this week. *sniff* My dad's fifteen minutes of fame by proxy... gone so quick.

Travel plans are still up in the air. Hopefully I shall know one way or another next week. *crosses fingers*

I wish your dad luck squeezing money out of this! XD

Oh, I think he's already taken one of the domains he purchased that has our last names and has redirected it to his Poker website. So any poor hapless fan that wants to join this American idol's fan club will instead find themselves at a poker site.

...I don't think he's thought this very far through.

*snicker* Good luck to your Dad! ^_-

He's gonna need it ;)

Do you need to "buy a plot" from Amazon like we joked about a year or so ago?

Perhaps you had the knowledge of the Ancients downloaded into your brain while you were busy trying to get the new computer completely functional. :D

What were the odds your father would start his Facebook at the same time there was a possible Idol with the same name? Maybe he should buy a lottery ticket.

Keeping fingers crossed for you concerning the travel plans.

I think an Amazonian-acquired plot is just the thing here! Actually, it looks like I'll be heading up to Dallas this weekend, so next week will be very interesting to see if anything is shaken loose up in the old noggin'. I mean, it has a plot, I just don't know what's happening in the non-angst arena.

Mmm, lottery ticket. Don't tempt me.

Keeping fingers crossed for you concerning the travel plans.

Mom went and applied for her passport today, so that's a positive sign.

Please, please, pleeeease have your dad watch the Vegas poker scene and explain to me why Sheppard folds. It's been bugging me since it aired. ;P

And he asked me if this was normal

*G*

Ahahaha... I'll see if I can't get him to watch the episode with me at some point. I just rewatched the scene in question, and I have one of two explanations... either the Wraith is getting inside John's head (like Todd is attempting to do later) and influences him to fold... or thinks he has Wraithy's number and knows he's not bluffing. I'm tending to lean toward the first explanation myself.

[identity profile] trystings.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I can definitely see the Wraith getting inside John's head and influencing him to fold, but what I don't get is the end of the scene.

Wraith bluffs (I mean, he so does, no way did he know that the fifth card would be a 7), John swallows and folds, the Wraith starts raking in the chips, BUT ... all of a sudden he looks up and eyes Sheppard sharply, Sheppard gives him one of his patent half smirks and the Wraith suddenly decides it's time to leave.

It's that last part I don't get. Like Sheppard was on to something and let the Wraith know.

I'm probably reading too much into this. Great scene though. ♥

Agreed, awesome scene! ♥ A very interesting play on the predator/prey dynamic.

And hrm... I don't think I quite noticed it before, but yes. I wonder exactly what was going through John's head, especially since the Wraith could have been listening in. After rewatching it this morning, Joe F plays it... very similar to the battle of wills John has with the Wraith Queens.

...hrm, now I'm going to have to go rewatch that later scene with Todd. There seems to be something else going on there.

Hey, a famous Dad - sort of!! *bg* Gotta tell hubby about that!

I have lots of plots, but none that I imagine are much use to your current story, sorry! Ah well, maybe the plot fairy will visit during the night - that's what often happens to me!

Fingers crossed for your travel plans - I think you need a break after the last couple of months or so of hectic life!

Probably true in this particular case. *g* Sadly, the plot fairy didn't visit me last night, because my brain was too busy keeping me up with other things when all I really wanted to do was sleep.

Fingers crossed for your travel plans - I think you need a break after the last couple of months or so of hectic life!

I think you're very right! My vacation back in December really didn't feel like much of one, because there was way too much drama happening on all sides.

Ahahah, that's adorable about your dad! (my mom's been on lj for years, but my dad on facebook...can't quite see it. He's more an old-skool mailing list 'netter...)

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 01:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's very cool that your mom's so active on lj and supportive of your fannish activities! My mom has the tendency to just stare at me puzzled, but try to be supportive anyway.

My dad's kind of strange, in that he's not exactly old-fashioned, just always very late to the party.

Hee - my mom actually wrote ST:TOS fic in high school, never knowing that there was a greater fandom out there publishing zines at the same time. She was a bit surprised when we got into fandom, but she understood it, even if she doesn't actively fan much herself (though she's written a bit of fic herself, and she was all over slash from the first introduction...)

My dad's always been on the cutting edge of computers, but the social networking isn't quite his cup of tea...

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2009-02-20 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm afraid my mother will never quite get slash, so I have to be very, very careful to put up something very gen if she ever wants to look at my Kindle. That's just an awkward conversation waiting to happen! (Thankfully she's ordered her own, so I won't have to show mine off to prying eyes anymore.)

My dad's always been on the cutting edge of computers, but the social networking isn't quite his cup of tea...

Huhn. I can kind of get that. I find I don't really like the kind of social networking you find on Facebook and MySpace, it seems too... impersonal? I always wind up getting dragged in by other people, but it loses its shine quickly.
