The Lost Tribe -- Initial Reaction
HEE!
My reaction to "First Contact" is scattered throughout other posts, but before I forget, I figured I would make a quick reaction post. In no particular order, the big giant hearts:
♥ John's face as he was forced to make a decision that was basically "Rodney or the galaxy (plus the Daedelus crew)", awww, John...
♥ SNEAKY ASGARD 4TW!
♥ Poor Daniel's betrayal over the rogue Asgard's utter callousness.
♥ Nice callback to Loki. Never thought he could be the only one who thought that way.
♥ CONTROL ROOM/STARGATE WHUMP
♥ McJackson snark
♥ John playing "human shield" with Radek. Aww...
♥ John in the infirmary (OUCH), getting glass picked out of his back. With his dog tags hanging down, and generally looking haggard, yet stoic and manly. Yum.
♥ Oh, Todd. You and Woolsey make such a cute couple. XD
♥ NEW VILLAIN who can kick everyone's ass, but be slightly pacific at the same time. SWEET! (However, they need a new name, because calling them "Asgard" feels wrong)
♥ Teyla doesn't want to be left behind!
♥ Ronon's Daedelus warfare, dropping down from ceilings, GLEEFULLY blowing up major systems ("Nah, life support's over there... I think." Did you take lessons since DV Ronon? Aww)
♥ Ahahaha! Keller's "I'm bowing down to your request and--PSYCH!" moment. Maybe I imagined the sneaky look on her face. That was priceless.
♥ Rodney's been hanging around John too long! "Let's blow it up!" "That's your plan?" "It's the cornerstone of distractions!"
♥ I like new Traveler girl. (Plus, she played Anna on One Tree Hill. And crap, I just outted myself to being someone who watches One Tree Hill.)
♥ John feels dissed that Larrin hasn't called. Ahaha, oh, John. She's just not that into you.
♥ EVERYONE SAVES THE DAY (including Marks)
♥ Danny Whump! (But without worried team, aww... but we get worried, babbly Rodney!)
♥ Woolsey putting his foot down and blowing that machine sky high. (Okay, I may disagree with the decision, but Oh, Woolsey!)
♥ Rodney not complimenting people unless they're dying: "It's something I'm working on." Okay, so it's not really true, but it made me laugh either way. Oh, Rodney.
♥ Poor Ronon, getting rejected, but trying to play it off... but can't say I didn't see that coming.
(Clubs, because there are no broken heart symbols for things that disappointed me):
♣ Big giant broken heart/club over the head to the idiot who decided to release the big reveal as a commercial, ruining that element of suspense for me (and the person who uploaded it on YouTube. Argh! SPOILERS EVIL!)
♣ No Rodney +John ANY OF THE TEAM reunion scene
♣ This one I'm a little more confused on than broken hearted about. I was 99.99% sure that Keller wasn't going to choose Ronon (from spoilers I caught accidentally), and from her reactions in the episode... it seemed to me her decision may have been based on not really agreeing with his tactics. That's the way I'm taking it, that poor Ronon had a chance and wasn't chasing after someone who'd already given her heart away. One-Sided-Pining!Satedan ≠ ♥
♣ Where was Lorne? I don't think John was implying that he doesn't trust Lorne to run Atlantis... I'm sure that was basically a "at least I can keep Teyla safe" maneuver on John's part keeping her there. But really?
♣ Where was ColonelBCaldwell... for the whole episode? Was Mitch Pillegi unavailable for filming on the second half? If so, couldn't they have said he was knocked out or something? Longest BRB EVAH!
♣Oh god, I can see the Keller wankstorm brewing already. I'm going to practice my ostrich impersonation methinks.
♣ I can haz team reunion? Oh wait, I already said that.
Woolsey Crush Episode Rating (out of 5 ♥s):
♥ ♥ ♥ ½
Overall, awesome episode, and one I'll definitely be rewatching. I have faith that anything I have forgotten to mention, the rest of my f-list will.

Todd slinging an arm around Woolsey's shoulder = ♥ Thought I was going to die.
Teyla? Is she on SGA?
Surprisingly the Keller wankstorm is brewing in the whump thread because she took too much time away from Sheppard. *sighs dramatically* I hadn't even considered it until someone said it. Silly me for enjoying the show.

And he did it more than once! XD Todd/Woolsey is so my new OTP!

You're kidding me right? *headdesk* Just... nevermind. Poor girl could probably not appear in an episode and still upset someone.

*boggles* Good grief, really? I was already expecting a lot of complaining from certain segments of fandom just because Keller had a large role in the episode, but that's a whole new level of HUH?
I enjoyed the episode -- not as much as the first half; it had the "too much crammed into one episode" feeling that their big-explodey-space-episodes usually do -- but it was still very fun. (And the Daedalus almost crashed on an ice planet! That made me grin.)

"too much crammed into one episode" feeling
You know... I think that, more often than not, the #11 slots have that feeling. "The Hive" and "Be All My Sins..." definitely had a similar thing going on. Some great moments, but for some reason it doesn't hit that "team" feeling despite being big ensemble episodes.
And the Daedalus almost crashed on an ice planet! That made me grin.
Oh yeahhh, that's why that part seemed so familiar ;)

They revealed the identity of the mystery alien in the promo? What is it with this network and their weird marketing tactics?

<-- your dolls are running
What is it with this network and their weird marketing tactics?
SciFi is very well-versed in the "shooting themselves in the foot" school of marketing. See, it very rarely produces results, but it's so much cheaper than actually thinking about something for two seconds and saying "Oh wait, will this ruin the episode for people?"

(Anonymous) 2008-10-13 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)Today's D-day. Customs had my shipment, released it, and now it's AWOL again. The thing is, nobody knows anything, but they are all so NICE! They call me honey, I'm being killed with kindness, I can't even yell at them. *headdesk* I need to yell.

See, when SciFi (or MGM, who knows) cancelled SGA and launched teenfest SGU, I was really upset, but I tried to console myself with the fact that they must know what they are doing. After all, they created Stargate and they want to make money, right? But the longer I'm subjected to SciFi's idiotic marketing schemes, the less confident I am that they *know* what they are doing. S5 promo pics with floating people? Trailers that give away the eps premise? Five second opening credits? Calling your audience "too old"? WTH?
I've ordered the Mrs Field's recipe book (IhazUSaddress) and am licking your icon! Yo!
Also, do you have imdb.pro? How old is Linda Ko?

Have to go. Art class.

I think Woolsey did the only thing he could; millions could die if the Asgard (should we adopt what Daniel called them at least once, the "Assgard"?) find a replacement control crystal! At that point, the base seemed to be unmanned; the ships had all gone up to fight the Traveler and Lantean ships. I also got the impression that most of the Asgard were never actually at this lab at all, but somewhere else. I could be wrong. I'm not sure how many are left.
I think it was less that Jennifer disagreed with his tactics than that the disagreement over tactics reminded her of how very different they are (and that she'd rather be with Rodney). I'll stick my head in the sand right next to yours.
Too bad they couldn't afford Lorne and Caldwell!

Re: Woolsey's decision on blowing the place up.
I'm not saying they shouldn't have blown up the lab. I do think destroying/dismantling that thing was the only option with the danger presented. What I mean is there was absolutely no need to blow it up RIGHT NOW, all of the things it might have that could help the expedition in the future be damned! They could have fixed the Daedelus systems in orbit, send a team to strip the place bare while the repairs are going on--and if the Rogue Asgard show back up, beam everyone out and blow it sky high THEN. In the first episode, it was stated that the facility was drawing massive amounts of power, which is something the expedition is always in need of--wouldn't it make sense to maybe figure that out? Grab some spare parts? Get the notes from the system? I don't know, I liked it, but it felt a tad overkill since there was no immediate danger, and a definite waste of resources that could be put to good use.

Todd + Woolsey 4-EVER! *ahem* (But the arm around his shoulder was so cute! XPPP)
And yeah, loved take-charge!Woolsey at the end, even if it was a questionable call.
Lorne could've been off-world when the gate blew, no way for him to get home...
We need more McJackson banter! badly! *crosses fingers for movies*

SO TRUE! XD
Todd + Woolsey 4-EVER! *ahem*
They're children would be life-sucking paper pushers--oh wait, we already have those here on Earth.
Lorne could've been off-world when the gate blew, no way for him to get home...
Okay... here's one where I'm not sure if I should be intensely worried for any teams stranded offworld or not. Obviously they'd have no way of knowing that dialing the gate would cause it to explode--but does that only happen if it's able to make a connection and form a wormhole? Because if Atlantis's gate was offline, would it just not work? But then, wouldn't they dial the Alpha site? Which would make their gate go 'splody (and the one on the other end?) ...I'm thinking about this too much.
*crosses fingers for movies*
How are you guys doing on avoiding movie spoilers?
