Did you manage to beat it into submission using the methods you posted the other day?

Yes, a combination thereof did it. I went back and edited the entry because the browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped=true turned out to render the search function useless for me (since it disregards history entirely and only checks through URLs that have been typed in before... while I often click on links and then revisit them a couple of times during the following days.)

So now I'm using a combination of browser.urlbar.matchBehaviour = 2 (changed in about:config) and the Hide Unvisited add-on. Just these two things already do the trick - keep bookmarks from popping up out of nowhere, and keep search for strings limited to the beginning of words and not the middle. The past two days it's been working as well as before this mess.

The oldbar add-on is nice in addition because it makes the URL bar look like the old one, less obtrusive, but it's mostly cosmetic since it doesn't change the underlying search algorithm.

(Who thought it would be a good idea to include bookmarks in the search? If I'm looking for a bookmark, I go to my bookmarks folder. Plus, I'm sharing this computer with a bunch of people, and I trust them to be nice enough not to snoop through my bookmarks, but it's kind of hard to avoid looking at other people's data when they're shoved into your face.)
