Fic Meme

Snerched from... half my f-list? Even if I haven't quite had time to respond to them all yet.

List one, three, or five of your favorite stories that you have written and why they are your favorite.

Members of this author's flist: list one, three, or five of your favorite stories by this author and why they are your favorite. Then copy this meme and post it on your own journal for the same.

Dead or Alive - An oldie, but still one of my favorites. Re-reading it today, there are some things I would fix grammar and narrative-wise (I really skimmed over the implications of something I kept hinting at, that today I would have tried to address), but it's a nice, fairly light-hearted action/adventure buddy fic set in season one. it's focus is definitely on John and Rodney, but it's probably the closest thing I've written to a "team" fic. Of my early stuff I think it's one that stands the test of time more.

Revenge of the Discs - Because it still manages to crack me up, even today. It was just way too much fun to write what with the differing perspectives and the yanking around of the narrative. I might have pulled something trying not to snicker too loudly while at the office. I still can't throw away a pile of CDs without thinking of the line "your ass had more shimmer than a disco ball".

Thicker Than Water - This one I am still very fond of, despite the angst it induced during the writing and titling process. There are a lot of reasons I really like it, some of them having to do with my own family life, but I really liked the way it turned out. There was a lot of things I didn't actually write down, but I was trying to hint at without saying. Of course, knowing exactly where things are headed with the boys at the end probably makes the ending easier for me to stomach.

Wit's End - I broke Rodney, and darn it, it was fun. Time loops = no long term consequences (physically anyway), and it was just fun to explore Rodney's character and push his buttons in various ways. And what I thought would wind up making him snap didn't turn out to be the breaking point. I possibly also love my villain more than is healthy (and his awful, cheesy, groan-inducing name).

See No Evil - My [community profile] sgabigbang monster, and officially the longest thing I've written -- ever. Yes, yes, I know I said I hated it while I was writing it, but now that it's done we're best friends. This thing tested me in more ways than I can possibly talk about in one post. As a writer, it's the first time I've had interweaving plot threads, subplots, and themes and symbolism pop out at me in the middle of writing. It's just... it's special.

Looking at it... most of those are fairly recent. I think this year alone, I've been able to really start to pin down what "works" and why. Around the end of last year I started looking at my favorite authors and studying their stuff and why it resonated with me so much. I don't think I've really cracked it, but I think I've been learning how to add a little more depth (at least to my eyes) to my writing.

I think you've definitely cracked it with See No Evil!! Which you may guess will be in my top five of your stories when I get my brain into gear - probably tomorrow now - and sort them out for you!!

And then sort out my own top five...

Yeah, tomorrow sounds good for that!

A superduperfast comment before I am heading south:

I love everything you've written, but my favorites (off the top of my head):

- Revenge of the Discs; this one made me laugh so hard, I had tears rolling down my face. (I promise you that one day I will sit down and draw you real art, not just a Calvin & Hobbes manip. :D)

- What's in a Name; great fic and the last sentence is brilliant.

- Thicker Than Water; I love that one, it has humor, angst, emotions. (And now I want Dave and Rodney to meet. *g*)

I can't wait for BigBang. :)

Okay, finally sat down and done this! But there's sooo many good ones to choose from!! Just five?! Argh!!!

So, after a quick flick through your stories I have managed to whittle it down to five - so here they are, in no particular order:

See No Evil - yep, you know I love this one, don't you? Think I've told you enough during the writing process!!

Wit’s End - love the way you push Rodney to the edge! I also love the OTT villian! At first, I thought it was a one of your humorous stories, but it soon became clear that it wasn't! Brilliantly done!

Into the Woods - this cracks me up every time I read it! I've started doing a commentary for it - illness has brought that to a temporary stop - but so far I've struggled to say anything more coherent than LOL all the time!!! Excellent fic!

This Never Happened to Kirk - I love this one as well. Poor Sheppard, trying to get a handle on a very drunk McKay! It's funny, but also I do feel sorry for how Rodney got into this situation. Don't let the team get their hands on those 'bikers'!!

Dead or Alive - this has been a favourite of mine before for some time now! So much to love about this story, I don't know where to start! Lots of John and Rodney, and I like the villian as well. The ending bit with the near miss with the wormhole and Rodney's reaction always cracks me up!

So, just five? Not fair! There's so many more that I like - including Thicker Than Water, Ties That Bind, Rough Landings, Breakdown...OTTERS!!!

Meant to do this, oh, about six days ago.

I don't think I've read all your stories! Okay, some catching up to do. But some of my faves:
"Lost in Translation": yeah, it's crack, but somehow it's really satisfying!

Also cracky: "Revenge of the Discs"

"Wit's End", which nearly caused me to lose my mind. I couldn't believe I kept reading it. I hate Groundhog Day. You made me keep reading this story. It was Rodney mouthing off that did it.

"Unspoken Bond": Not just Rodney, Ronon, and John, but Radek too. All awesome.

"Altruistic Streak", because it's just so right for those characters. It must have happened, even if we didn't actually see it in an episode.

Aw, thanks! I'm still impressed you stuck with "Wit's End", despite the genre really not being your thing. It nearly caused me to lose my mind as well, so I totally feel you there ;)

"Lost in Translation" amuses me, because I think I wrote that in all of ten minutes with the help of Babelfish. I wish I still had the original notes on what everyone was saying, because the translation back into English definitely doesn't work. I believe Teyla threatened to "put a cap in [Rodney's] ass" and Ronon was quoting the Monty Python bit about mooses. Meese. Moose? But yes, definitely crack on that one.

I don't think I've read all your stories! Okay, some catching up to do.

That's all right! I've still got a backlog of your stories to read too! I'm thinking I might put "Haar" and "Unrelenting Past" onto my Kindle for reading on the go (seems to be where I'm getting my fic reading done these days).

I'm so far behind on replying to comments it's not even funny! Your vacation is probably almost over!

(I promise you that one day I will sit down and draw you real art, not just a Calvin & Hobbes manip. :D)

HEE! The Calvin and Hobbes manip makes me giggle though, so not a bad thing in my mind! Although what art that story inspires would probably be pretty funny.

great fic and the last sentence is brilliant.

*g* You know, you're still the only one who's ever mentioned that last sentence. Makes me wonder if it was way too subtle.

(And now I want Dave and Rodney to meet. *g*)

I know! All the different combinations and scenarios of them meeting is just too wickedly fun! Man, I really need to start working on that sequel in earnest if I'm going to finish it before the year's end.

You like your Kindle, then?

Part of my hesitation about Kindle is because then I could take fanfic with me, and I would read even fewer novels that aren't fanfic! The other part, of course, is that it costs money, and I am cheap!

[identity profile] greyias.livejournal.com 2008-08-20 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
There are no words to express the love I have for my Kindle. It is expensive, but so worth it for me. It almost gives the feeling of reading an actual printed book to fanfic, which makes it that much more enjoyable. Tiny bit of learning curve on how and where to hold it, but I can read fanfic in bed at all sorts of odd angles. It's also got Amazon-paid-for wireless internet (that sucks the battery like no other), but it's good for a quick check of e-mail.

You can also buy novels for the Kindle straight through Amazon (why they pay for the wireless, methinks), although with so much SGA fic to go through, my novel reading has dropped fairly low.

ETA: That said, I am a tiny bit of a technophile, and am probably going to purchase an 8" netbook when Dell finally unveils their version. I might be a teensy bit biased towards cool shiny stuff ;)

Hee! Thank you!

Interesting how much our lists on this mesh. I wonder what that says... ;)

Don't let the team get their hands on those 'bikers'!!

*snort* I actually started on a sequel/missing scene that details what happens between John and Rodney leaving the bar (and the reason for his swearing about the bikers) and getting back to Atlantis. Of course, uh, I'm having trouble with the structure so it's on the backburner at the moment.

Let's not go there...I think the answer could be somewhat scary!!!

It's a pain when a story stalls out - believe me I know!! Sounds like it would be fun (!!), but I'll just have to wait and hope it reignites someday!
