Life on Mars

...is addictive.

I finished the first four episodes last night, and am having to physically restrain myself from watching more. I'm trying to *coughACQUIREcough* some DVDs that won't cost me an arm and a leg so I can share the joy with my parents. Although, hrm, they didn't take to Torchwood as well as I had hoped. Oh well, here's hoping.

I was telling [personal profile] mumumugen about it this morning, and how much I really don't want to like Gene, but I'm being dragged kicking and screaming from the "grudging respect" camp to "Oh, Gene!". Episode Four just about did me in. The man is an onion -- he's got layers! I'm finding it fascinating how much I can really dislike so many things about a character but still like him. I really enjoy Sam too, but am at the point in the series where I still want him to wake up. Creepy TV girl and her clown doll are -- well, creepy. Sam really needs to turn his TV off at night so she stops crawling out of it ala The Ring.

BTW, [personal profile] sholio, one day... one day I'll find something wildly amazing that you won't be able to get enough of. Then you shall be cursing my name as you stare at ~20K's worth of remaining story and an approaching deadline. Granted, you really can't be responsible for any procrastination at all. Or anything really but giving it a thumbs up... but still! Then you shall rue the day that you said, "Yeah, check it out" to me in such a friendly  and nonthreatening voice.

Go on... start rueing!

Okay, it's a pipe dream, but let me have my moment.

First Heavy Time/Hellburner, now Life on Mars. What next? Those graphic novels that are sitting on my shelf, waiting for me to reach August and free brain space? Don't answer that question!

Oh right, blame ME. All I'm doing is squeeing. It's not MY fault if it's contagious! XD

Isn't it an awesome show, though? I adore it. I only wish there was more. I was actually watching songvids today and feeling sadly wistful because I want more than just 16 episodes!

(The graphic novels. Er. I hope you like them ... I'm still uncomfortable with certain things about them because there is a very obvious learning curve that went into producing them. I'm much happier with Kismet (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/laylalawlor/huntersmoon/series.php?view=archive&chapter=17177) ... now with 100% more transvestite mobsters... (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/laylalawlor/huntersmoon/series.php?view=archive&chapter=23750&mpe=1&fromwhich=25&direction=f) I'm sitting here right now penciling pages for the next Kismet book, so it's on my mind.)

If I don't blame someone else, then I have to accept responsibility for my own actions. And where's the fun in that?

It's not MY fault if it's contagious! XD

It really is an awesome show! Sad that I'm already a quarter of the way through it. Part of me is getting very wary of the US remake, as I did a lot of research/analysis of the British-American show conversions for a paper I wrote back in college. Some things just don't translate well. I have a feeling that they're not going to do Gene justice. I'll cross my fingers, though, because if they pull it off... it won't be the same characters... but it might get us more stories? I don't know, Catch-22.

I've got faith in you! I meant to e-mail you when I got them in the mail, but somehow it slipped my mind. I haven't had time to really sit down with them yet, but the art looks gorgeous from the quick glance I took! The story sounds fascinating. I just need to exorcise SGA from my brain a little so I can get properly absorbed into another world. I have a problem 'multi-tasking' when it comes to reading/writing. It's one or the other.

now with 100% more transvestite mobsters...

*iz ded* OMG, that's HILARIOUS. I'll definitely need to pick that one up then. Frank looks absolutely adorable in his fishnet stockings and his RAGE.

Hehehe, Life on Mars is taking over America...!!!

Also not sure about the remake, though I suspect it won't make its way over here so I'll have to decide if I want to watch it online or not. The only thing that interests me is Colm Meaney as Gene! I love Colm's acting, and I'm intrigued to see what he does with the character.

But yes, best to think of Life on Mars US as a different story and characters to Life on Mars UK, me thinks! Like an AU.

Of course, Americans will pick up lots of cultural things that I'll probably miss - vice versa on the UK version!

The squee spreads like wildfire!

The remake... hrm, it'll probably only make its way over there if it's successful. Generally the only US remakes that wind up crossing the Atlantic are the really successful ones. I can't remember the title, but I want to say the US remake of Fawlty Towers found its way back to Britain, and I want to say "All in the Family" was another remake... I don't know, it's been a while since I've written the paper ;)

I'll probably be thinking of it as an AU, rather than the same show if it's any good. After squinting and thinking about it, I guess I can see Colm Meaney as Gene. Probably wouldn't have been able to if he hadn't been so deliciously twisted playing Cowen. He'll always be Chief O'Brien to me first and foremost.

I'm sure I've missed some of the subtle cultural stuff that's gone on so far... but it's still fun!
