Harmony - Episode Reaction
Last week's reaction/review wound up turning into a giant recap, which I have yet to finish. Heh. Apparently I had more to say and snark about than I realized. Now, I realize that a few people probably do not like this episode, I don't know why yet, because I thought I'd write down my own thoughts on the episode before reading anyone else's.
The beginning - Amused me, lightly, but there was amusement. I think most of the amusement came from the dialogue I was making up in my head to the looks that John and Rodney were tossing back and forth.
The child - Let's not mince words. This child was not meant to be anything but annoying to the point of wanting to smack her. It's the way she was written and played. They succeeded at it very well. Sadly, she also reminds me a lot of my little sister and how she used to act (and still does sometimes). Mostly with the back and forth; being horrible to Rodney, then sweet angel to John (who unlike my parents, didn't seem fooled for the most part by the act. Go John!) And with all that said, she still cracked me up. I'm sorry, but a tiny little girl hitting on and proposing to John is almost nearly as funny as an eighty year old woman doing it. I also find it very amusing that he can hug tiny children better than his own teammates. I <3 our socially inept pilot and his equally socially inept sidekick.
The ambush - Hee! Rodney pretending to consider giving up the child made me snicker, but what made me go "Aww" was the absolute frantic worry he got over the radio when John wouldn't reply. Oh, and the name thing, I officially want to simultaneously hug and smack the writers. Yay for Rodney finally calling him John outside of women infected with nanites, but argh, because this makes it so much harder to figure out what to use when and where. Maybe I'll make a few name analysis posts for anyone as obsessed with the name thing as me. Oh, and the look on John's face as he comes out of the brush, all business -- ah, Soldier!John, almost enough to sway me from the Snark Side. Well, okay, that's a lie. But it's a fantastic look that conveys so much, especially since he doesn't go back to normal John mode until he has to defend "taking his time" to Rodney. Heh, snark 4tw.
The mini-drones - Did someone write a fic with those? Either way, very cool, and something to add to the arsenal of knowledge and weapons. They also mentioned they've been looking for it for two years. Might make some interesting fic fodder of their failed attempts.
The painting - I think I accidentally read one post on SGAHC where someone hated it, but um, obviously, I adored it. I cracked up so loud I had to rewind to hear what Rodney was saying. "Yeah, that's basically how I remember it." Oh, Rodney. I think the painting went to prove that Harmony is a mini-Rodney through and through, because I could totally see him commissioning that kind of thing if he were in that position (well, and thirteen years old). Poor John. I can see him getting Rodney back for the snide comment though. Which, of course, is fine with me, because it would be hilarious.
I enjoyed the episode as a whole. John and Rodney, if you haven't noticed by now, are my favorite characters, and I think this is the first episode really since "The Defiant One", where we've had a nice solo John and Rodney adventure. (I don't count "Trinity", because that was all about tearing the friendship apart, which, IMO, should have waited until later in the second season, or third, but whatev.) I love all the characters on the show, but any time I can get more interaction between these two, I'll greedily lap it up. It's pathetic, I know, but hey, we all have our faults ;)
So, I guess that wasn't very thoughtful or eloquent. But I managed to actually finish writing it out before a whole week had passed.
Next week, my personal fanon gets Joss'd as we meet the Sheppard family, and I have to find a way to salvage the AU story/series I've been working on to keep it as close to canon. Oh, the joys of fan fiction.

You are so very right there....lol
Thank you, this is the best review I've read and followed my now sentiment. This was a fun, fluffy eppy not to be taken too serious except to follow the exploits of my favorite duo. It was funny, Sheppard got to play solider with the kill three Genii with one shot, trick did things to my heart.
Why isn't he a legend to the Genii yet? Hello?
I loved the snark, the fun and and cat and mouse games. The crushing was cute as was the obvious turn at the end.
Rodney did call him John when he feared for him...so still under emotional stress to put with the other few times. All I ask in the future is a John and Rodney eppy where their is more dire peril and I'll be happy!
Oh the fic you mention was by Kodiak Bear....I'll find the link later.

I am an admitted McKay Girl, but Soldier!Sheppard almost does me in. He's just so serious, so cool (for lack of a better term), I love it when he gets serious for those few seconds. I had similar moments in "Hide and Seek" and "The Storm/The Eye". Something about the way he holds that gun and the expression on his face just grabs me. I love that he's so laid back, but when he gets serious, oh, I sit up and pay attention, because the kid gloves are off.

He has to be. I mean, the man was able to take out fifty-five of their elite squad of soldiers with a single, calculated move on the operations room. It was a necessary (IMO) move at the time, but something that is very profound on both sides. I haven't watched "Coup D'Etat" in a while, but I vaguely remember him having some sort of input into that situation as well. If someone on the Genii homeworld, much less the Genii army doesn't know about John Sheppard, they must have had their head buried in sand the past few years.

Yes and yes, on both accounts! I've been waiting for an episode for Rodney to call John by his first name without nanites/women involved since probably Season One, and that it was because he was worried about him makes me melt into a puddle of squee. I also echo the sentiment that we need a pure H/C ep focused just on the two of them (or with both of them in the lead). I think they'd lose a lot of viewership by everyone dying when that happens. However Joe M. has been remarkably good about giving us these sort of moments/episodes this season, so perhaps a few invasions of his blog with requests for "H/C" might be good before the season planning is over won't go unnoticed. (John or Rodney, as long as there's emotional fallout I'm there!) Okay, that's probably a pipedream, but...

I mean their writers are good enough to give us action and some gritty drama especially with the chemistry between Rodney and John.

I do think it was a writing slip to have Rodney calling John by his first name. I intend to ignore it unless more episodes present further evidence! It seemed out of joint with other episodes.
Yes, it was all fluff, but well worth it for banter and their expressions! Who needs a plot with those two?

I love fluff, especially when it leaves so much room for interpretation with their expressions. I love those two. If you haven't seen Joe M's "behind-the-scenes" clips that he has on his blog, you should, because despite being both Joe and David, they remind me so much of John and Rodney. Oh, boys,.
Sad to say I have a story where I decided to see how far I could go without reining the two in... it went on pages, and I had to stop it for sake of expediency. If I could get a weekly dose of snark from each episode, I'd probably be a happy fangirl.

The mini-drones are from Never Stop Moving by Tipper. Joe Mallozzi says the writers aren't allowed to read fanfic so it would appear to be a great minds think alike thing.
That painting still has me laughing whenever I think of it - and it's the Rambo-Rodney on it that really cracks me up, not so much poor cowering John (though that is funny too)! Ah, 13 year old brats!! And 39/40 year old ones too...hands up who thinks McKay's taken a photo of the painting and loaded it onto Altantis' internet?!! LOL!
And I wouldn't worry too much about being jossed on the family stuff, especially if it's already AU. I've had a few canon stories jossed and so now I call them AU if anyone asks! It happens when you write for an ongoing programme, and the readers tend to understand this.
McKAY: This is obviously some sort of huge misunderstanding, all right? I am Doctor Rodney McKay. I'm a close personal friend of Ladon Radim ...
... you know, your leader? I'm your greatest ally! You don't know who I am? I'm the genius scientist, the friend of John Sheppard. I gave you the bomb! ... No? Nothing? What do they teach you in Genii school?!

When they first revealed the painting I thought that the one in front was John. It took me a few seconds to see the switch, which is partly why I cracked up so much. Rambo Rodney was hilarious, but the fact that John was cowering amused me so much because it's just so wrong on so many levels.
A picture of that painting has to be circulating the Atlantis net.

Yeah, I was just trying to follow really close to canon... despite it's AU-ness. It's sort of a moot point anyway ;) I'm just being petulant. It'll probably work out better this way, as my reasoning for John's actions were a bit weak anyway.
